Measuring Guide for Compression Stockings

Measuring your legs for compression stockings, support socks, support hose, and gradient compression hosiery:.

  • For knee-highs: measure around your ankle and calf. Then, measure the distance from the floor to the back of your knee.
  • For thigh-high and pantyhose: measure around your ankle, calf, and upper thigh. Then, measure the distance from the floor to your upper thigh (bottom of your buttocks).

An Important Measuring Tip...
If swelling is an issue with you, measure your legs, first thing in the morning, after you get out of bed. This is when swelling is at a minimum, and the size of your legs should remain once the swelling is eliminated. Each of our compression products has a sizing chart on the product page.

Ankle ANKLE
Measure around the ankle at the narrowest point, generally above the ankle bone.
CALF
Measure around the calf muscle at the widest part.
Calf
LENGTH
Measure from the floor to the bend behind the knee.
Length
THIGH
Measure around the thigh approx. 3" below the gluteal fold (crease of buttocks).
Thigh
THIGH LENGTH
Measure the distance from the bottom of your buttocks to the floor.
Thigh

Sizes may differ between various brands of support stockings. Keep in mind that each manufacturer of support hose has their own sizing chart. A medium size in one brand of circulation stockings, may not be a medium in another. Some brands of compression stockings offer petite (shorter) lengths, while others do not. Knowing your measurements will ensure you get compression hosiery that fits properly and comfortably.

I had high hopes for this product, but am disappointed. I am 5' 6" tall, 125 lbs, so I ordered the small short in sand as instructed by my Physical Therapist. Unfortunately, they are constantly sliding down. I suppose it's because these were made "unisex", which is an injustice to either sex, that the legs seem a bit long as does the panty portion. The panty area is no where near as tight as most compression garments. And, what man would want to wear these since there is no fly?! This item is called open toe pantyhose, but make no mistake, these are not pantyhose. They are as thick as socks, similar to Jobst Relief compression garments. Also, these 30-40 mmHg are almost too easy to put on and take off. I don't feel I'm getting the amount of compression I want. I really am disappointed since I wanted open toe compression garments without having to purchase expensive custom made ones, but these miss the mark. I think that if Therafirm made them for woman's build, and not unisex, it would make a world of difference.
