How to measure your legs for compression stockings, support socks, support hose, and gradient compression hosiery.
Where to Measure
- For knee-highs: measure around your ankle and calf. Then measure the distance from the floor to the back of your knee.
- For thigh-highs and pantyhose: measure around your ankle, calf, and upper thigh. Then measure the distance from the floor to your upper thigh (bottom of your buttocks).

How to Properly Measure and Apply Compression Stockings
The Key Measurements
Ankle
Measure around the ankle at the narrowest point, generally above the ankle bone.
Calf
Measure around the calf muscle at the widest part.
Length
Measure from the floor to the bend behind the knee.
Thigh
Measure around the thigh approximately 3" below the gluteal fold (crease of the buttocks).
Thigh Length
Measure the distance from the bottom of your buttocks to the floor.
Sizes may differ between various brands of support stockings—each manufacturer has their own sizing chart. A medium in one brand may not be a medium in another, and some brands offer petite (shorter) lengths while others do not. "I have been wearing some form of Sigvaris compression leg wear for 30+ years for preventive care. Prior to “investing” in the Sigvaris brand, I purchased and solely wore compression travel socks from the airport kiosks! This is the first time I considered ordering colored/ patterned knee socks in light compression for daily wear. Yesterday, I wore an argyle patterned pair all day from morning through mid evening under leggings. The socks’ fabric and texture were comfortable and stayed in place even though I was bending and twisting, etc. , while gardening and house cleaning. After reviewing the directions for the correct way to put on and take off the socks, they were easy to handle. I have purchased 3 other knee sock styled brands in the recent past because their price point was lower… however, was disappointed in the quality of the socks, fit and discomfort after wearing for more than a few hours. I realized that the Sigvaris brand offers the best value for quality, durability, and style."
