Collection: Compression Socks for DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)

Compression socks and stockings may be used as part of a clinician-directed plan for DVT risk or post-DVT symptoms. They are sometimes recommended for people with increased clot risk during long-distance travel, after surgery, or after a prior DVT. The right product and compression level depend on your health history and should be selected with a healthcare professional.

When compression may be considered

  • Long-distance travel: travel lasting more than 4 hours can increase clot risk, although the risk is generally small for most people. Move your legs regularly and walk when practical. If you have additional risk factors, ask your healthcare professional whether graduated compression stockings are appropriate.
  • Post-surgical recovery: follow the product, compression level, and duration prescribed by your care team. For non-ambulatory recovery, see our TED hose & anti-embolism stockings; these are different from everyday graduated compression stockings.
  • After a prior DVT: a clinician may recommend compression to help manage swelling or post-thrombotic symptoms after evaluation.

Choosing a compression level

Do not choose a compression level for DVT prevention or treatment from a general shopping guide. Levels such as 15-20, 20-30, and 30-40 mmHg are used for different needs, and higher compression is not automatically better. Ask your healthcare professional which level, length, and wear schedule fit your situation.

Fit matters: measure your ankle and calf in the morning and use the specific brand's size chart. See the measuring guide.

Important safety note

Do not use compression as a substitute for medical evaluation when DVT is suspected. Unexplained one-sided swelling, pain or tenderness, warmth, or redness should be assessed promptly. Difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing blood, lightheadedness, or fainting requires emergency medical attention.

Shop clinician-recommended graduated compression from JOBST, Sigvaris, Juzo, and Truform in knee-high and thigh-high styles. HSA/FSA accepted on eligible products.

Graduated compression stockings may be recommended for some travelers who have additional blood-clot risk factors. For most people, the risk from long-distance travel is generally small. Move your legs regularly, walk when practical, and ask your healthcare professional whether compression is appropriate if you have a previous clot or other risk factors.

Compression level should be selected with a healthcare professional based on your medical history, circulation, mobility, and reason for use. Do not assume that a particular level such as 15-20 or 20-30 mmHg is appropriate for DVT prevention or treatment without individualized guidance.

Do not use a compression purchase as a substitute for medical evaluation when DVT is suspected. Unexplained one-sided swelling, pain or tenderness, warmth, or redness should be assessed promptly. After evaluation, a healthcare professional may recommend a specific compression product to help manage swelling or post-thrombotic symptoms.

Yes. Men's and unisex graduated compression stockings are available in knee-high and thigh-high styles and multiple compression levels. For DVT-related use, choose the product, compression level, and wear schedule with a healthcare professional rather than by gender label alone.

TED hose, also called anti-embolism stockings, are designed primarily for non-ambulatory patients and differ from graduated compression stockings used by people who are walking. They are not interchangeable. Use the product type and compression level directed by your healthcare team.
