Understanding Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a long-term condition where damaged or weakened vein valves can't return blood efficiently from the legs to the heart, causing blood to pool. Symptoms include swelling, aching, heaviness, skin changes, varicose veins, and in advanced cases venous ulcers.

Daily graduated compression is the cornerstone of CVI management — it counteracts the failed valves by mechanically driving venous return upward, reducing swelling and slowing the disease's progression toward skin damage and ulcers.

Compression Levels

20–30 mmHg (Firm) — the most prescribed level: varicose veins, moderate swelling, recovery
30–40 mmHg (Extra Firm) — severe swelling, lymphedema, and CVI, under medical guidance
40–50 mmHg — severe lymphedema and advanced venous disease, under medical supervision

Can compression stockings cure CVI?

No — CVI is a chronic, incurable condition because the damaged vein valves don't repair themselves. But daily graduated compression is the single most effective way to manage it: it controls swelling, relieves symptoms, and slows progression toward skin damage and venous ulcers. Think of it as ongoing management rather than a cure.

How long each day should I wear compression for CVI?

What happens if CVI is left untreated?

Is CVI the same as varicose veins?
